Last month, Johnson wrote a letter to Board members stating that at the end of her contract on April 30 next year, she will not be returning after less than four years on the job.
In a change of events, Johnson has accelerated that timeline and announced that her resignation will take effect beginning at the end of July.
Johnson has been at the helm of the district since December 2016, when she was named the interim superintendent. She was named the permanent superintendent in March 2017. She had been previously been offered a contract extension that would put it in line with the end of the school year, but she never signed it.
In a letter to her staff released this week, Johnson praised the district’s parents, calling them a “key ingredient to the successful education of our children.”
"In the eloquent and effervescent words of the illustrious Maya Angelou, diversity there is beauty and there is our students embody the strength, courage, wisdom, and advocacy embodied in the Bridgeport Public Schools vision of a high-performing learning environment, where students thrive academically, socially, emotionally, and civically," she wrote. "I will miss our children of Bridgeport Public Schools, as resign from my position of Superintendent of Schools on July 31, 2019. Thank you for allowing me to be a member of the Bridgeport Public Schools family."
